DIY Garden: Miniature Potted Pond

In "light" of recent sunny days here in Portland (not today though, unfortunately so...) we thought it would be fitting to give you a fun gardening craft idea. This one has the ultimate cute factor, and will add the perfect unique touch to your yard or garden: a miniature potted pond.

Start by filling a large watertight pot with a few bricks at various heights. These will act as "shelves" for a few various potted aquatic plants. Arrange the bricks and plants in a way so that the plants are high enough to be visible above the water level. Once the plants and bricks are arranged the way you like them, remove the plants and fill the large pot with water, until appropriate water level is reached. Place your plants in the water, submerging it's small pot. Use pebbles as weights to keep the small pots in place.

The picture at right includes: water hyssop, water lily, and variegated sweet flag.

Tips:
  • Adding goldfish will make your pond come to life! Make sure to de-chlorinate the water first though.
  • Adding a submerge-able oxygenating aquatic plant will help keep the water clear (and healthy for the fish if you add those too.)
  • Remember that the water level will change come rainy and dry seasons. Your pond will probably need a little re-filling or draining at some point.
